Professional Highlights

Education

Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, 1998 Thesis: Electrical Resitivity and Heat Capacity of FeAl Alloys

M.S. in Ceramic Engineering, Clemson University, 1988 Thesis: Reduction in Nitrate Leaching from Cement- Fly Ash Waste Forms

Dr. Kass is a Senior Research and Development Staff Member and has been on the staff since 1988. He is principal investigator of several programs related to improving efficiency and lowering emissions from heavy-duty engines (diesel and natural gas), especially off-highway engine platforms (for agricultural and marine sectors). The focus of these efforts has been injection control and SCR chemistry. Other relevant expertise includes corrosion assessment, development and characterization of advanced materials, and emission sensors. Dr. Kass has also been involved in special projects regarding acoustic detection and materials processing.

  • Faculty Affiliate, Material Science and Engineering, University of Tennessee Knoxville.
  • Served as technical observer for a DARPA project (acoustic detection, 2004) Invited.
  • Technical Reviewer for Tribology Letters and Society of Automotive Engineers.
  • Member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. Activities within SAE include session organizer and chairperson.
  • Member of the American Ceramic Society. Activities within ACS include Executive Committee leader for the Southeastern Section and organizing the fall meeting in 1991.
  • ORNL Significant Event Award for “achieving breakthrough lean-NOx catalysis performance with hydrocarbon-selective catalytic reduction” (2003).
  • Technical committee member for E-diesel consortia.
  • 2 patents filed.
